What to Pack For Childcare: A Handy Checklist

Home > News > What to Pack For Childcare: A Handy Checklist

When sending your little one off for the first time it’s perfectly natural to feel a mix of emotions, and one common struggle many parents face is knowing what to pack for the first day of daycare at an early learning centre. Having a well-prepared bag not only sets your child up for a positive experience, it also gives you peace of mind knowing they have everything they need for daycare. From extra clothes to comfort items, packing thoughtfully can make a significant difference in how smoothly the first day goes. This guide will provide a comprehensive checklist of first day essentials and what to bring to childcare.

What to Bring to the First Day of Daycare: 7 Essentials

When preparing what to pack for childcare, especially for your child’s first day, it’s important that you pack thoughtfully. Having the right items in their bag can make a big difference in their comfort and happiness throughout the day. Here’s 7 essentials that every parent should pack for their child’s first day of their childcare program, and why each of these items are necessary.

Spare Clothes and Shoes

Messy accidents happen, it’s all a part of being a kid, so packing extra clothes really is a must. Pack at least two sets of spare clothing, including shirts, pants, socks, and underwear, in case they spill food, get wet, or have a bathroom accident. Also keep in mind, while you want your child to look presentable, ultimately these clothes should be ones that are comfortable for them to run and play in, and you don’t mind if they get a little dirty or stained.

Labelled Milk

If your child requires milk, just ensure that it is clearly labelled with their name. Include any necessary utensils, and let the centre know about any dietary restrictions or allergies. Remember, no food should be brought into the centre except milk.

Sleep Essentials

Many childcare centres have scheduled nap times so kids aren’t too tuckered out for afternoon playtime. Aurrum Kids provide linen for children to sleep on, but if your child has a favourite blanket or any other sleep aids like a dummy or a stuffed toy, pack these to help your child have a more restful nap time.

Bottles and Sippy Cups

If your child uses milk bottles or sippy cups for water, pack enough for the entire day to keep them hydrated and happy, and label each one. You should also include any specific instructions for warming or preparing their milk.

Any Medication plus Identification and Emergency Contact Information

When you first enrolled your child at the childcare centre you may have already given them crucial details for emergency contacts and a list of who has rights to pick up (certain trusted family members or friends who can pick up your child on your behalf when you are unable to), as well as any health conditions your child has and if they require medications during the day. For the medication, include it in its original packaging with your child’s name and clear instructions on how and when to administer that medication. You may also want to pack a card in their bag with your child’s identification details and emergency contact information (such as your contact number and an alternate contact).

Bibs and Burp Cloths

For very young children, bibs and burp cloths are essential to keep them clean during feeding times, and pack a few spares to account for messy meals.

Comfort Items

Comfort items like a favourite toy or blanket can help soothe your child if they often feel anxious or they get upset when they are separated from you. Ensure these items are clearly labelled to avoid mix-ups with other children’s belongings. These comfort items often provide your child with the emotional security they need, and can make the transition into childcare much smoother. And Good Luck For The First Day!

If you’re feeling more anxious or stressed about your child’s first day than they are, that’s also completely normal! Here’s a few extra tips from Aurrum Kids to help the day go well.

  • Start preparing your child ahead of time (including packing most of the things they will need). Then double check everything the night before so you’re good to go in the morning.
  • Plan to arrive a little earlier or save a bit of time to stay with your child so that you can help them to settle in and get used to being there without you. Start by taking them to play or interact with other children. Their carer may also take you both and show some of the toys and activities the centre has, and if there is something in particular that captures their attention you can say your goodbyes and leave them to enjoy it.
  • When it is time to say goodbye, let your child know that you’re leaving. Give them a hug and a kiss, let them know when you’ll be back to pick them up, and say goodbye to their carer as well.
  • Keep in mind that especially in those early days, daycare can be very stimulating for little ones, and at the end of the day they may feel quite tired. Give them some time to recover at home with a nap, some quiet time or play, and consider an earlier bedtime so they are refreshed and ready for the following day.
  • Feel free to have a chat with your child’s carer if you have any questions or concerns about how your child is settling in, and they’ll be happy to help!
